St. Mary’s University President To Visit Gateway City
Dr. Cotrell to reconnect with alumni WHO: Charles Cotrell, Ph.D, president of St. Mary’s University (StMU); Pete Hansen, director, StMU Alumni Relations; and other StMU faculty and staff, including St. Mary’s University School of Law Dean Bill Piat; Assoc. Dean Al Hartman, and Board of Trustees Member Judge Alma Lopez.

WHEN & Thursday, March 10, 2005

WHERE: La Barranca, (formerly Guapo’s Sports Café),107 Calle del Norte, 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

WHY: “Laredo is #3, only behind San Antonio and El Paso, in students applying to St. Mary’s University,” said Mike Amici, (BBA,’73), president of the local chapter of the St. Mary’s University Alumni Association. “One of our main responsibilities as alumni is to serve as role models to the youth of our community, to show them how far a graduate of St. Mary’s can go in life. If you take a good look at the major industries of Laredo, including the legal/judicial system, banking industry, educational system and marketing entrepreneurial professionals, St. Mary’s has had a major impact in this community,” he said.

No other president of a major university in Texas comes down to Laredo meet with alumni on an annual basis. Alumni are reassured them that the school is recruiting top Laredo students, offering competitive scholarship and financial aid packages and still maintaining the same message of service to the community.

Alumni of all ages are encouraged to attend the Reconnect Reception. “We have such a wealth of alumni in town, graduates of different generations, some from the law school, some with their master’s degrees; all have something worthwhile to contribute to the organization, as they have done in the city. I hope to see everyone there,” Amici added.

“Historically, St. Mary's has been recognized as a spiritual center that maintains the highest academic standards in the Catholic tradition, with a specific focus on the Marianist tradition and its emphasis on educating the community,” said Dr. Cotrell.

St. Mary’s University, founded in 1852 by Marianist brothers and priests, is the oldest university in San Antonio, and the oldest and largest Catholic university in Texas and the Southwest. For more information on St. Mary’s University or alumni activities, visit www.stmarytx.edu
